Behind Closed Doors
Peanut’s been asking me about what it was like when I lived in New York. She’s curious about the city, the subway, museums, restaurants and places like the Statue of Liberty. We’ve been talking a lot about possibly taking a trip up north along the east coast and hitting NYC, Niagara Falls, Rochester and then going into Canada so she can see snow for the first time.
Talking to her about my 22 years as a New Yorker brought back a lot of memories. I lived near the EL (Elevated train) which then went underground and is then known as the subway. As a college freshman I took the EL every day. My favorite thing about it, if there was anything to like at that time, was looking into people’s apartment windows as the train went past them.
I always wondered who lived there and would make up stories in my head to pass the time. I wish I had a hidden spy camera to be able to really see what went on in their homes. I also would do that when sitting in a car. I’d look into windows and wonder what really went on behind closed doors.
