What I Learned From Steven Curtis Chapman
I had the opportunity to watch Larry King Live last night. Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth were first to be interviewed. Of course the topic for the evening was the death of their daughter Maria Sue who died in a tragic car accident on May 22nd of this year. Later on they were joined by their older children, Emily, Caleb and Will.
The interview became a ministry for people in grief, a witnessing tool of real people suffering but clinging to their faith.
This is what I learned from the interview:
1. God truly does not give us more than we can handle.
2. Unconditional love is real. (The Chapman’s are not angry with Will who drove the SUV which caused Maria’s death)
3. Faith is a lifeline that is available to anyone who desires it.
4. Although I think that I couldn’t survive this type of tragedy, I know that if I give my sadness to Jesus, I will.
This is what I pray that will happen from the interview:
1. Hearing a well known and respected Christian music artist say that he and his family are in counseling will help Conservative Christians accept the need for reaching out for therapeutic help including Psychiatric help.
2. More people will seek what the Chapman’s have by finding it through a relationship with Jesus.
3. Back-up cameras in large vehicles such as SUV’s will become standard and not an option.
From LifesiteNews.com:
King said of the interview, “The subject of the hour was faith, and faith renewed and faith restored, and I’m always amazed at that. I’ve never been able to make that leap into blind faith, which they have and trust. They believe that their daughter is in heaven watching down. I wish I had that belief.”
“But it was incredible to spend time with all of them,” he continued. “And the strength of all of them. And even though that strength may be looked…at by some as leaning on a fence that is God or religion I looked at it as stronger than that. They were an incredible group; I’ll never forget it.”
Larry King, you can have that belief!

I’ve walked the valley of death’s shadow
So deep and dark that I could barely breathe
I’ve had to let go of more than I could bear
And questioned everything that I believe
But still even here
in this great darkness
A comfort and hope come breaking through
As I can say in life or death
God we belong to you.

Beautifully written post! I watched it as well, and have even more respect for the Chapman family than I did before!
I also add an AMEN to this lending credence to Christians seeking professional counseling! I wouldn’t be here today had my parents not sought help for me many years ago!

That interview WAS amazing. It was hard to watch at times, but they did a fantastic job sharing their testimony, family struggles, and ministry.
Thanks for posting this.
