Stop Using The R Word

r-word.org

This is something that I’ve been fighting about for years. It may have to do with growing up next door to a sheltered workshop from AHRC, at that time known as The Association for Retarded Children, now Citizens. It may have to be because I had an Uncle who is mentally challenged (he passed last October) and an Aunt who is also mentally challenged.

More importantly is the topic, the fight, the challenge - stop using the R word. There is a website where you can pledge not to use the R word. I suggest you also pledge to spread the word about this too.

There are badges available for you to place on your blog, website, Facebook page, MySpace page, anywhere on the internet. Please take part in this effort.

The R word is degrading. It is not funny. It is demoralizing. It should not be part of normal conversation. It hurts. It should not be used in the media.

I pledged last week and have the same badge on my blog. My son is going into a MRS class for Middle school. It stands for Mental Retardation Severe. Not sure why they classify it that way. He has always been in autism classes moderate to severe, but I wanted him to go to a traditional calendar school and not year round like they have here in Los Angeles. This is what they had available and most of the kids are visually impaired.

Going to pledge today, not that I have ever used that word (atleast since I was old enough to understand the meaning of it).

I work as a personal assistant for a person with a physical handicap and we’ve talked a lot about issues like this, and some people assume that just because you can’t walk on your own - nothing else works…
