Yard Sale Was a Bust

We learned our lesson very well today. The hard way. You have to advertise your yard sale to make money, to get people to come, to help people to find your house. We chose not to advertise and we had 3 people all day.
My friend’s house is in a rural area. Although we had large signs up, I think that people felt they were driving too far when they didn’t see a sign for a while and turned back. So I just listed the sale on Craig’s list. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that last night! And tomorrow morning we’re calling a radio show that lets you list your yard sales for free on the air.
I made a big $13.60 for today. We had fun talking and hanging out. But with all the work we put into this sale. I could talk and hang out minus the labor.

You have most definitely got to spend the money to advertise, especially these days when there are so many yard sales and if you don’t live in an area where there is a lot of traffic to begin with. Better luck today!

It’s a bit like setting up a website isn’t it. If it’s tricky to find and not enough people know about it, you don’t really get a chance to monetise it huh?

I’m having a book sale next weekend and I plan on advertising on my blog and on Craigslist. I’m also going to post signs in the neighborhood and on the library bulletin board. Wish me luck!

been there. it seems like the work isn’t worth the reward. we had an apartment sale when we lived in our apartment, and even though we put up signs all over, we hardly had anyone show up.

Yup, you’ve got to advertise, and for at least a week in advance too. People odn’t spontaneously decide to make a detour to a yard sale if they’re busy, they tend to plan to go.

Sorry that it didn’t work out! Sometimes advertising something as a multifamily yard sale draws people in. But i have to admit, I mostly yard sale by looking in the local paper or just following signs

Wow!,it’s a shame your garage sale was a bust. Your so right about advertising, but you can also advertise your garage or yard sale online for free with a site like http://garagesalehomepage.com.
Now that your sale is over you can still sell your items in your own free online garage or yard sale. Hope it goes much better!

You do have to advertise in order to attract people, much like anything else.
However, you could try getting a booth at a flea market for a weekend. I know here in Florida we have the Sanford flea market and its dirt cheap to get a booth for the weekend, and there are ALOT of people who cruise it.

Sorry to hear such a low turn out. Advertising in your local paper or weekend paper in the garage or yard sale section. Some papers it is free or a low fee to put the ad in there. Signs with big lettering for the address that can be seen from a vehicle driving by is important. Use bright neon colored poster board for signs. Also, selling cans of cold soda pop at yard sales are a plus.:) Kids like to help sell those. Good luck next time!

Garage / Yard Sales, in my mind, are far more work and messing around than they’re worth, but they are good for burning a weekend if you have absolutely nothing else to do!
