Sometimes it is just a mom and her child or children, some too young to give their mothers a break even on this special day. Sometimes there’s no support system at all, or one made up of other single mothers. This day can be difficult when you see husbands or significant others bringing home flowers, making dinner reservations and telling mom to sit down and put her feet up. It’s hard when you still have to do the same things you do each day and not get a day off.

Here’s some ideas to get you started:

1. Prepare a meal in advance. Bring it to the single mom on Mother’s Day so she doesn’t have to cook a meal. Add some flowers and paper plates too!
2. Offer to babysit either for Mother’s Day or another day.
3. If possible take the child/children to purchase a gift for their mother.
4. Send a card with a gift certificate for something just for her, like a massage or a facial.
5. Take her and her children out to lunch or dinner.
6. Make a basket of small gifts that allow her to pamper herself at home. You can include candles, soaps, bubble bath, chocolates, etc.

If you know a single mother, ask her what she’d like for her Mother’s Day. If you’re a mother and will be spending time with your own family and can’t do something that day, you can do it on the day before. She may not feel comfortable any way being with your family that day as it might cause sadness. But you won’t know until you ask.

Society says that mothers have one of the most difficult, but rewarding jobs. Imagine doing that job alone. Waking up in the middle of the night to a sick child without someone to worry with, making decisions that concern your child’s wellbeing without someone’s advice and being on call 24/7.

I’ve been there for 10 years. I was blessed to have a supportive family. My ex-husband did not see our daughter from the time she was 6 months old on. I had an extended family but not someone with me helping me to raise my daughter.

Single Mothers deserve recognition for what they do each and every day.

I got a Winnie The Pooh card from Peanut and a cake that she decorated at school. I also got a Mickey Mouse card from Hubby with a unique vase and flowers (it wasn’t really a bouquet, just a small bunch of flowers that were beautifully decorated with a long feather as the center piece). I got a call from Lady Ali wishing me a happy day. I’ll be seeing her tomorrow. She’ll be stopping here with her fiance before they leave for their long ride to Kansas. I’m trying to keep it together….

Church was different because our sanctuary is still in the remodeling phase. I taught Children’s Sunday School. One of the things we saved time for was painting on the sheet rock up on the stage. I got some white paint for the children, old shirts to cover their Sunday best and let them have at it. Soon we had our Pastor and one of the Elders up there writing too. The children wrote things like, “I Love God” “Jesus Loves Us” and “Happy Mother’s Day”. Only in my church!

At home I rested and took a nap. Later for dinner, Hubby went to Outback Steakhouse for take out. I had a delicious meal of steak and lobster tail, with baked potato and steamed veggies. I left some steak and veggies and Hubby didn’t finish all of his mashed potatoes. I saved that for a good lunch.

Then we had the cake that Peanut made. I feel like I could roll out of here without my rolling chair I’m so stuffed. The gifts don’t matter to me. What’s more important is the time we spent together as a family. I’ll have a second Mother’s Day tomorrow with my older daughter. I know I’m going to cry so please keep me in your prayers.

My dream was one that I didn’t want to wake from. I somehow was extremely wealthy. So rich in fact that I lived a life of utter fantasy. I had clothes and shoes galore. So did my family. We lived in a house on the beach with every gadget you could think of. I had people to do everything for me, like cook, clean the house, do the laundry and even give me massages. We traveled a great deal and instead of going on a regular plane we used a jet charter service. Traveling on a whim was just part of the deal too.

I slept in late today. In fact this was one of those dreams that I could sort of wake up from but go back into it when I fell back into a deep sleep.

Believe you me, this isn’t something that I want. I’m happy with my life as it is. I feel very blessed and loved. Money is necessary to pay the bills but not my main goal in life.

I hate to admit this but we haven’t filed our taxes yet. No need to alert the IRS. We didn’t pull a Wesley Snipes. We did file an extension. So that stimulus check we thought we’d have soon won’t be coming yet. We’ll get by though. We always seem to.
